Disney brave toys8/15/2023 ![]() ![]() Ember, who rarely cries, envies Wade’s ability to forge easy, strong connections with others his tears, she knows, are part of the current that sweeps them along. His family even has a parlor game in which they try to make one another cry by summoning old memories or improvising sad scenarios. And the film’s aspirations as a parable of xenophobia and cross-cultural rapprochement might have had a better shot at landing if Ember didn’t so frequently set the creatures and things around her on fire.Ī running joke in “Elemental” that evolves into a grand theme (spoilers forthcoming) is that Wade cries a lot indeed, he’s crying when we meet him. ![]() Especially coming from a studio that used to be so terrifyingly fastidious about its world-building, the internal logic of Element City is wobbly at best-e.g., Ember can burn instantly through a chain-link fence but can sit safely in a movie-theatre seat. The script, which tosses together ingredients from “ Zootopia,” “Turning Red,” and “Frozen II,” suffers from a remedial echolalia-Ember reminds us that she must take over the bodega and fulfill her father’s dreams at narrow intervals, which is helpful if you are half watching a movie in your living room while scrolling your phone, but less apt for a big-screen experience. Ember, the short-tempered daughter of hardworking immigrants, is training to inherit her father’s bodega Wade, the emotionally labile scion of boho Wasps, is a city health inspector who meets Ember by way of a flooding pipe. But he refused to accompany me to a morning screening of “Elemental,” preferring to “wait until it’s streaming.” My six-year-old son has spent countless hours watching Pixar movies at home and beelined to a theatre last summer to see his old pal Buzz Lightyear’s movie, “Lightyear,” on its opening weekend. “In fairness,” one analyst told Variety, “the shifting of consumer behavior is less on the Pixar team itself and more on the former Disney leadership that siphoned three of the animation hub’s films to streaming as part of a broader strategy.” My own reporting supports this thesis. (which buoyed the sensational recent box-office performances of “ The Super Mario Bros. Postmortems of the “Elemental” disaster have focussed on the film’s lack of established I.P. Energy monopoly examples8/15/2023 ![]() Clearly, however, monopoly power requires, at a minimum, a substantial degree of market power. The Supreme Court has defined market power as "the ability to raise prices above those that would be charged in a competitive market," (8) and monopoly power as "the power to control prices or exclude competition." (9) The Supreme Court has held that "onopoly power under § 2 requires, of course, something greater than market power under § 1." (10) Precisely where market power becomes so great as to constitute what the law deems to be monopoly power is largely a matter of degree rather than one of kind. Market power and monopoly power are related but not the same. Thus, a small degree of market power is very common and understood not to warrant antitrust intervention. Virtually all products that are differentiated from one another, if only because of consumer tastes, seller reputation, or producer location, convey upon their sellers at least some degree of market power. Economists say the dry cleaner possesses market power, if only to a trivial degree. (6) For example, the unique location of a dry cleaner may confer slight market power because some customers are willing to pay a little more rather than walk an extra block or two to the next-closest dry cleaner. In our economy, few firms are pure price takers facing perfectly elastic demand. Market power is a seller's ability to exercise some control over the price it charges. ![]() Drawing on lessons from the hearings, along with existing jurisprudence and economic learning, this chapter discusses the Department's view on appropriate assessment of monopoly power in enforcing section 2. ![]() Accordingly, it is important to determine when monopoly power exists within the meaning of section 2.Īn understanding of monopoly power helps in crafting appropriate antitrust policy towards single-firm conduct. It significantly reduces the possibility of discouraging "the competitive enthusiasm that the antitrust laws seek to promote," (5) assures the vast majority of competitors that their unilateral actions do not violate section 2, and reduces enforcement costs by keeping many meritless cases out of court and allowing others to be resolved without a trial. This monopoly-power requirement serves as an important screen for evaluating single-firm liability. (3) As discussed in chapter 1, the mere possession of monopoly power does not violate section 2. ![]() (1) The possession of monopoly power is an element of the monopolization offense, (2) and the dangerous probability of obtaining monopoly power is an element of the attempted monopolization offense. Monopoly power can harm society by making output lower, prices higher, and innovation less than would be the case in a competitive market. Return to Table of Contents Chapter 2 MONOPOLY POWER I. Bakewell tart recipies8/15/2023 ![]() ![]() Roll rolling pin across top of pan to cut off excess dough. Layer this on top of your jam, scatter with almonds and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to a 9' tart pan, gently lifting and pressing into edges of pan. Make the frangipane – this is easy, just add your butter, sugar, egg and almonds into a bowl and beat together until smooth. Add plenty of jam onto the bottom of the cases and spread it round with the back of a spoon. Remove the cases from the oven and use a sharp knife to trim around the edges to give a professional finish. Bake your cases for 20 minutes then remove the paper and coins and bake another 10 minutes. Tear off squares of baking paper and weigh these down with some loose change (or baking beans if you have them). You want at least 1cm hanging over the edge when baking. Lay these on top of your tin and tuck them in. Step 2 Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Grease and line the base of a 25cm loose bottomed tart tin with parchment paper. If using wee tins, cut around a round object bigger than your tins to make discs. Bakewell Tarts 4. Directions Step 1 Preheat the oven to 200✬ (180✬ Fan). Roll out your pastry case using plenty of flour to stop it sticking. Rest in the fridge for at least 15 minutes, or up to a day. Use your hands to form it into a dough and wrap this in cling film. ![]() ![]() Step 3Īdd your cold water and use a knife to bring everything together. Alternatively, you can use a food processor. Keep going for a good few minutes – you want them like breadcrumbs. Start by making the pastry – weigh your flour and butter into a bowl and rub them together with your thumb and fingers. Grease some loose-bottomed tart tins (or one big one) with plenty of butter, getting right into the edges Step 2 Step 1įirst, preheat your oven to 180C/160C fan/Gas 4. Just do a better job of not losing the bases than I have done, for I need to bake all my tarts on a baking tray. You could always go to your local large supermarket and purchase them, they’re dead cheap. This recipe works well as individual ‘cafe-sized’ tarts as I’ve done it here – but I realise not everyone has such tins, so you can equally do tiny wee tarts in a bun tin or a massive tart in a pie dish. So essentially it’s cake wrapped in pastry. Sprinkle chopped strawberries over the filling. It’s a simple, crumbly shortcrust pastry, some good shop-bought raspberry jam and frangipane, cakey mixture made with ground almonds. Spread jam in an even layer over the bottom of the cooled crust. The Bakewell tart is a simple and glorious creation – it bears little to no resemblance to the packaged ‘slices’ that taste like the plastic marzipan. ![]()

2 player pinochle rules8/14/2023 ![]() The main difference (that I can remember) is that for Michigan rules, a double pinochle (i.e. It should be noted that I learned how to play with "Shore rules" but in other branches of the family, there are "Michigan rules". Queens in all four suits ("60 Queens") = 6Ī, K, Q, J in all four suits ("Roundhouse") = 28 (?) Pinochle (J of diamonds + Q of spades) = 4 The points gained here are added to the total number of counters taken during play. This ability to get 5 extra cards has often driven people to bid too high and pay later!Īt this point everyone lays down their "meld". The high bidder then picks up the cards in the widow and incorporates them into his or her hand. ![]() The remaining three people then become the "other" team. If no one has an Ace, then it's the next person with the 10. The next person around the table, to the bidder's left, who has the Ace of trump, is his or her partner. The highest bidder names one suit to be trump. ![]() If no one bids, then the dealer is the "bidder", and has effectively bid 40 points. The total number of counters in the deck is 50 (counters = A, 10, K), including 2 points for taking the last trick. This is the "widow" and the high bidder gets these cards. It was a high point of my adolescence, for sure.Īll the cards are dealt to the players (often in batches of 3 at a time), leaving 5 cards untouched in the middle of the table (which are supposed to be dealt randomly during dealing, and never the last 5 cards). I remember being dealt an outstanding hand, outbidding my great-aunt (who was a legendary high bidder) with a bid of 72. After learning the rules and such, we started getting competitive. My cousin and great-aunt were visiting from the East Coast. I still remember very distinctly the summer I learned to play this game. one time we tried to remember them after a long break, and we got it all wrong. I think it speaks to our competitive nature that this is one of our favorite card games whenever we get at least 5 family members together.Īt a family reunion this summer I played it a bit, and decided to write down the rules so I don't forget the next time I play. Several generations ago my family invented a version of pinochle that allows 5 players to play, and is won individually (not as a team). ![]()
